However, as with any good thing, there are those intent on abusing it and turning it from a way to make a legitimate living into a tool for thievery. However, as with any other fraudulent activity, if you keep your eyes open and your wits about you, you will see the signs and be able to disengage before too much damage is done. Here are some things you ought to look for, some red lights that can save you money, time and a great deal of aggravation.

Abusive Affiliates

Affiliates bent on fraudulent activities typically have their efforts revolve around the payment model, which is usually a pay-per-click or a pay-per-action (sale, registration, etc.) and can be either a manual thing or, in the case of pay-per-click affiliates, fully automated through the use of scripts, called "click bots" that mimic the activities of real human visitors. The Welcome Call

Your affiliate manager should contact each affiliate applicant over the telephone. During this call you will begin to develop a relationship with the new applicant and get to know them. You will also evaluate potential traffic, discuss expectations, offer campaign suggestions and inform them of any special affiliate promotions you may be running.

Managing the Metrics

Once your affiliate is up and running, you need to keep an eye on what they are doing. The two primary metrics you need to be looking at are traffic patterns and conversions. Traffic patterns are simply the flow of visitors through their site and where they go once they click on the affiliate's banner ads. Conversions are those clicks coming to your site that end in either a sale or some other valuable activity such as filling out a registration form. Exactly what counts as a conversion is up to you.

When it comes to conversions, you want to play the averages. The results of your affiliate should not deviate too much from the established average conversion rates (usually about 1-3 conversions per 200 product views) for your business. If they are too low, your ad is probably in the wrong place. If they are too high, you need to consider whether or not your affiliate is using incentives or placing fake orders.

How do your affiliate conversions stack up against the traffic they are producing? To put it another way, if you see a great deal of traffic from an affiliate but few or no conversions, then there may be a problem, especially if you are running a pay-per-click program and your non-affiliate conversions are significantly higher. This is an illustration of why you want to move away from a pay-per-click model and go to a pay-per-sale one instead.

Look to Your Top Producers for Clues

You will have a handful of affiliates that will produce most of your good traffic. Establish and maintain a solid working relationship with this group. According to Dave Cosper, Vice President of marketing here at America's Best Companies, "You should always look for programs where the affiliate payout is at least 25% of the product/service being referred."

For example, if a merchant is selling a product for $100, they should be paying the affiliate at least $25. "Here at ABC, for example, we pay a 33% commission to our affiliates for one-year member enrollments," added Cosper. Fraudulent merchants can also deliberately underreporting sales or lead figures. This can be the result of criminal intent or desperation in the face of bankruptcy or some other crisis. Either way, it is the affiliate that pays.

In his article, "The Red Flags of Affiliate Marketing Scams," affiliate entrepreneur Clay Mabbit describes the six things that any potential affiliate should look for when considering developing a relationship with a merchant as well as what they mean.

These signs of a scam are:

No affiliate support contact. When an affiliate program includes a toll-free telephone number, it's a good sign that things are on the up and up.

However, the lack of a phone number does not necessarily mean the program needs to be avoided. The Internet lends itself to email contact, and most websites structure their contact support system accordingly. If the website for an online income opportunity does not include an email or a contact form, though, you are probably looking at an affiliate program scam. Once you locate the email or contact from, it's a good idea to send a message with a simple question to see how long it takes the company to respond. If you don't receive a response addressing your question within a few days, tread lightly. The company might not be intentionally trying to scam you, but if they can't quickly respond to emails, they are doing something wrong.

No website. Similarly a contact email without a website shouldn't instill much confidence. A legitimate online income opportunity will have a detailed web site, providing information and showing some time and energy has gone into planning. A simple website is not difficult to create, but leaves a slightly larger trail leading back to the creator than that left by a mass emailing. Again, while the presence of a website is not a guarantee that a program is trustworthy, the absence of a web site should definitely be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism.

No product or service. What is the company selling? If the only product is a chance to make money, you've probably stumbled onto a pyramid scheme. In order for any referral marketing organization to make money, someone on the outside must pay money to the organization. If the only people paying are joining the organization, than no income is being generated. The members are just passing money around between themselves with everyone hoping to be holding the bag of money when the music stops. Above and beyond this fundamental flaw in the business model, pyramid schemes are also illegal in the United States.

No free participation. If you have to pay a company for the privilege of trying to sell their product and increase their profits, you aren't looking at an affiliate program. You've found an example of multi-level marketing (MLM). Not all MLM opportunities are scams, and some people are extremely successful at MLM. Unfortunately, if you aren't one of the few who can make it work; you'll usually spend a fair chunk of change discovering this MLM program doesn't fit your needs. True affiliate programs are free to join. If things don't work out the way you expected, you haven't risked any of your money.

No positive testimonials. Even though there is no financial cost for an affiliate program, you will be investing quite a bit of your most precious commodity, time. Before making that sacrifice, it's always a good idea to spend some time scouring the Internet for people who have some experience with your program.

Don't rely on the testimonials a company provides on their website to give you a complete and accurate picture. Head to your favorite search engine and see what kind of dirt you can dig up. A search with the program name and the word "review", "scam", or "experience" is a good place to start. Even high caliber programs will likely have some negative reviews from people frustrated the program wasn't a good fit for them, so don't immediately condemn an opportunity for a little bad press. Unless a program is brand new, though, you should be able to find a few positive experiences and success stories.

No track record. A good affiliate program is going to continue to be a good affiliate program for a while. Resist the temptation to be swayed by marketing hype that urges you to "get in on the ground floor" of a brand new opportunity. Of course, there's something to be said for being the first to market with a new idea, so you shouldn't be afraid to immediately embrace an affiliate program that you feel good about and doesn't set off any of the other red flags described here.

If you are on the bubble trying to decide if a program is legitimate, though, you're better off waiting. In six months dependable affiliate opportunities with quality, high-demand products will still be around, and they'll still be plenty of money to be made. Meanwhile, most of the affiliate program scams will have collapsed.

Bullying Buyers and the Network

Yes, even some of your customers will try to cheat you. You may find yourself facing stolen or fraudulent credit and debit cards, bad checks of various stripes, illegal paypal chargebacks, fake registration information and more. The number of ways that these criminals try to work you over is dizzying proof of human ingenuity if nothing else. This is where a legitimate affiliate network can come in handy. These organizations will check out transactions-credit and debit card numbers, IP-addresses and other things that could indicate fraud-before they take place and often have a fraud database to keep criminals, once they have been identified by their system, from coming back and trying again.

When considering an affiliate program, either as a merchant looking to recruit affiliates or as a potential affiliate looking for business, it is a good idea to consider joining a reputable affiliate network. They offer safety to merchants and add a bit of credibility to fledgling affiliate sites.

Affiliate Marketing - Competition Analysis 101

Like the heading states, in this article I'll be discussing competition analysis and I'll be showing you some of the methods to use to do so. We'll be finding out who exactly your competitors are, how many of them are there and what keywords are they targeting. It's pretty important to do this after you have done your keyword research or even better to combine this and do it while doing keyword research. By doing this you will get a good indication of how full or empty your chosen niche is and if it is profitable.

So after doing your keyword research head over to Google, with your main theme or term.

Now take the keyword you wish to analyze and perform a search query. Google will in turn bring back all the results of pages that have been indexed with the word you queried and will highlight it in bold blue. Now this is not the best way to do targeted competitor research, because a lot of the websites brought back don't even target that specific keyword or aren't at all related to that theme. So the number you'll see after performing your search is in most cases extremely bloated and there is not a chance that the amounts of competitors are that high.

To find out exactly how many indexed pages in Google are targeting that exact term or phrase - do the following:

Next add your search term between quotation marks. Now click search again and see how the number drops.
You should see a pretty big drop in the competition after your initial search, but even so you're not done yet. The list of sites you see only have the targeted word or phrase in their content, that's not to say that their site is related or specifically targeting the above theme. So here's how you find out who you're real competitors are - the guys optimizing their sites for the keywords in and around yours.

Start by removing the quotation marks around the phrase in the search box. Then go ahead and add the following directly in front of the keyword (allintitle:) without the brackets and then click search.

Now the number you see after doing the allintitle search will give you the correct competition value. These site's specifically target the queried search term. They use the keyword in their page, content, url and obviously title. So they are truly optimizing their site for that specific keyword, phrase and ultimately that niche.

Ok, so how much is too much competition. Well we personally recommend you to stick to the lower range when it comes to competition, especially in the earlier stages of your affiliate marketing endeavors. Go for niches with competitors less than a 10 000, that's save for now.

Think of it as when you were little, did you try out for the little league baseball team or did you go all the way to the major league... makes sense doesn't it. So stick to what you know for now.
Make sure to play around with this and before you know it you'll find a market with high demand and not enough suppliers. Lookout for gaps like that in the beginning which will make all your efforts worth while.

Lastly, Make Sure To Never Do The Following...

When starting to optimize your website and after you found a valid keyword... make sure that the keyword you chose has sponsored links and listings in Google. Never optimize a page for a certain keyword if it doesn't have sponsored links. The sponsored links and amount of it tells you that there is money to be made from that keyword or niche.

Internet affiliate marketing seems to be one of those black/white, love it/hate it kinds of things.

The people who are making tons of money with affiliate marketing can't stop telling you why you should jump right on the band wagon with them - and the people who have never gotten affiliate marketing to pay off for them frequently report that the whole idea is just one huge scam!

Like almost everything else in life, reality is somewhere in the middle - in that fuzzy gray area in between black and white.

My goal here is to help sort out some of the facts from the fiction, and separate the reality from the hype.

First of all, it is completely possible to make a lot of money with affiliate marketing. In fact, people all over the world have "quit their day jobs," "earn six-figure incomes," and "work at home when they want to" - just like all the sales pitches tell you.

But here's what the sales pitches don't include along with all the pictures of mansions, ocean-going yachts, and glorious beach vacation photos.

All those people who have turned affiliate marketing into their "golden egg" have worked hard to do it. Yep. Worked. Hard.

That's reality. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You have to work to get what you want. Mom was right!

If you are looking for instant, no-effort, "push-button" riches, affiliate marketing isn't for you. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

On the other hand, it you are willing to learn some new things, invest some time and some energy in it, affiliate marketing can do everything you want from it - with unlimited rewards for you.

In fact, few, if any, business functions today are not in some way informed by the Internet and that is especially true in the realm of sales and marketing. When you think about online marketing, what comes to mind? Search engine optimization or e-mail marketing are probably at the top of the list, but there is something else in the marketing arsenal that you may be overlooking: Affiliate marketing.

How Affiliate Marketing Works

At its most elementary level, affiliate marketing is a fairly simple and straightforward affair in which one business partners with another, placing an ad link on the second company's website and paying that company for every sale that a visitor sent over from that affiliate site makes on the seller's site.

It is a solid, reciprocal relationship. The affiliate drives customers to the seller and the seller pays the affiliate for the traffic. This type of business arrangement, where the seller pays a commission for sales leads, is referred to as revenue sharing, and has been around in one form or another for as long as large scale sales efforts have existed. It entered the world of ecommerce the same way that so many other innovations have, through the adult entertainment industry.

Affiliate advertising is, usually, a pay-per-action (also known as a cost-per-action or CPA) affair. In other words, something that you and your affiliate have made an agreement about happens, such as an ad link being clicked and a sale being made, and you owe that affiliate money. This is different from pay-per-click (also known as a cost-per-click or CPC) arrangements where payment is made for each click on the ad. That means, whether or not you convert that click into a sale, the affiliate gets paid.

This is in stark contrast to display ads where you pay once and the more customers respond the cheaper the ad (in terms of cost per customer). Because of this, it is important to be able to set an advertising budget-especially for pay-per-click arrangements-large enough to pay for the number of expected clicks or actions, regardless of the number of sales that result.

Types of Affiliate Programs

While there are no real industry-wide standards for categorizing affiliate marketing sites, the following is a basic list of the types of sites that are used by affiliate marketers:

Click-per-action networks are affiliates that expose their advertisers to their own network of affiliates (also known as top-tier affiliates)
Search affiliates that use pay-per-click search engines to promote advertiser offers
Co-registration affiliates that include offers from other companies during the registration process for their own website.
Blogs and RSS feeds
Email list affiliates
Comparison shopping and directory sites
Loyalty sites that provide some kind of reward system for purchases
Coupon and rebate sites
Content, niche and product review sites
Personal websites

Getting Paid: How compensation works

You are paid by your customers, your affiliates are paid by you, but how? There are a number of different compensation schemes and either you or your affiliate will have a preference for one or another. In some cases the issue is negotiable, in others it is not. The various compensation schemes are:

Revenue sharing, also called "cost-per-sale" (CPS) is the compensation method of choice today, accounting for 80% of all affiliate programs today.
Cost-per-action (CPA) is the second most prevalent scheme in use today, accounting for another 19% of affiliate programs.
Other methods such as cost-per-click (CPC), where the advertiser pays for each click, and cost-per-mille (CPM), where the advertiser pays for every 1000 ad views, come in at 1% of affiliate programs. The use of these methods declined over the years for a variety of reasons that included the necessity to pay even though the ad failed to produce sales and, in the case of cost-per-click, fraud. These methods are, however, still used extensively in display advertisement and paid search programs.

CPS and CPA schemes have higher expectations before a commission check is issued to the affiliate. In fact, as the names imply, the customer has to buy something. Only then will the affiliate receive payment. In this arrangement the advertiser and the affiliate share the risk of the venture. It is from this model that affiliate marketing gets its other name, "performance marketing." To make it under these rules, the affiliate must send only the best leads since it is only after a sale is made that the advertiser will reward the affiliate.

Multilevel Programs

While the vast majority of affiliate programs are simple, one-tier affairs, it can go beyond that. Such programs fall under the heading of multi-tier marketing: An advertiser makes an agreement with an affiliate. This is the "top-tier" affiliate. That affiliate then attracts other affiliates and the deal moves down to them. Our top-tier affiliate is paid at the agreed upon rate and gets a commission on everything that the "second-tier" affiliates bring in. Any referral program that develops beyond these initial two levels is considered a multilevel marketing or network marketing scheme. Given the terrible reputation these businesses have, it is wise to simply avoid them completely.

Finding Affiliates

It is not difficult to find affiliates. In fact, almost any website could be recruited as an affiliate. Bear in mind that high traffic websites will likely prefer CPM or CPC deals because these have a lower risk than CPA or revenue sharing. Some places to look while recruiting include:
Affiliate networks that already have a number of advertisers. These networks normally have a large number of potential affiliates for your company.
Sites that are relevant for the same audience that the advertiser is trying to reach. As long as the potential affiliate's site is not in direct competition with the advertiser, it can work.
Vendors or existing customers could be recruited as long as doing so doesn't pose any legal or regulatory issues.

The cost-per-sale model makes affiliate advertising very popular since you only pay for results. The biggest con regarding this method of marketing is history itself. Spam, adware, spamdexing, trademark bidding, pay-per-click fraud and a number of other issues have given this kind of marketing a bad name over the years. These troubles, however, are becoming less and less prevalent due to advances in technology and better methodologies for dealing with them. This, coupled with the way one only needs to pay for results, leaves affiliate marketing as a strong way to reach the audience you are looking for.

Let me share my experience with you. How I decided to pursue affiliate marketing because I believe earning money online is not achievable. I, however, was so naive to think that make money online was actually impossible for someone like me. I did not even know how to make a website. I am not a computer techie.

Internet Marketers Need PMA - Do You Have It?

Why is PMA so powerful? Perhaps a famous quote of Napoleon Hill's can give some insight to how I feel about PMA. "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve." I think it's important to add the words "with PMA" at the end of that sentence. Napoleon believed, as I do, in the power of PMA.

PMA, (positive mental attitude) was first introduced to me by W. Clement Stone's company, Combined Insurance. That's when I also learned of Napoleon Hill and one other PMA powerhouse, Zig Ziglar. (Speaking of Zig, I will finally get a chance to see him in person. I am so excited!) A positive mental attitude gives one that extra boost of energy needed to overcome challenges. It also contributes to a cheerful mood and lets one enjoy life more than those with negative attitudes. In my opinion Internet Marketers must have PMA, with faith, to be successful. Without it, it's easy to give up before reaching your goals. PMA helps to keep everyone motivated when faced with adversity.

Speaking of PMA, I had a very special coach in high school. Her name was Jean Marks and she coached basketball, field hockey, volleyball, & track & field. Yes, she was well versed in many different areas & as a result she inspired our teams to numerous victories and helped build our character. It was through Coach Marks that we adopted a poem as our pre-victory chant. Prior to each basketball game our team would get in a huddle and start reciting the poem. We'd begin softly & slowly, almost in a whisper, and as the poem progressed we'd increase our volume and speed. By the time we finished we were super psyched up for the game and ready to take on the world.

The name of the poem is "It's All in the State of Mind." Unfortunately, the author is unknown.

Here's the way that I remember it:

It's All in the State of Mind!
If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch, you won't.
If you think you won't, you've lost.
For out in this world we find,
Success begins with a fellow's will,
IT'S ALL IN THE STATE OF MIND.
If you think you're outclassed, you are.
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself,
Before you ever can win a prize.
Life's battles don't always go,
To the strongest or swiftest man.
But sooner or later the one who wins,
IS THE ONE WHO THINKS SHE CAN!

Recently I saw a version of this same poem while reading a book written by Napoleon Hill, called "Think & Grow Rich." Boy was I amazed & elated. For many years the only time I had heard this poem was when I was reciting it to my kids & friends. I was very excited to discover that Mr. PMA, as I call Napoleon, included my favorite poem in his book!

The awesome power of PMA made a deep impression on me and I set my mind to live by it. Over the years my friends have asked how I can remain in a good mood and not let certain things bother me. My only secret is because I believe in the power of PMA, with faith. Catch the PMA fever, it's contagious! All of a sudden your world will be a better place in which to live!

Most new webmasters look at the most profitable niches, instead of focusing on what they already have a deeper knowledge in. Most people have plenty of interests, hobbies or are book-smart enough to build a small, yet profitable site, targeting that particular area.

A small, non-competitive niche is exactly what the new affiliate marketer needs. The experienced derived from this first site, can prove valuable when trying to target a more competitive niche.

Just as the Internet has brought the information closer to people, it has made every bit of information likely to have readers. No matter how obscure the topic, people will always try to find interesting information. Many sports make for excellent sites, if you are a big fan of a soccer- or football team; why not make a blog about it? If the team is large enough – and you target clever keywords – you will have visitors reading your text, and hopefully clicking an ad or two.

The same applies to most sports; Golf, hockey, cricket or even bowling can be a good topic for a site, just make sure to evaluate the competition for each intended keyword before you start, as these are very popular sports, thus making the topic and keywords more popular online as well.

If you have more specific hobbies - such as woodworking, jewelry, pottery or any other craft – the competition are not nearly as hard, but the amount of potential visitors may be lower. No matter what niche you are targeting, make sure there are ways of monetizing your site. There are many different ways, but the most common ones are affiliate programs or contextual advertising.

If you are targeting a very small niche, contextual advertising will be likely to bring you only a small amount for each click, due to the lack of bidding for those keywords. Similarly, this can work FOR you if you are bidding for visitors using contextual ads. Finding an affiliate program in small niches may or may not be hard, but if you find a good one, you will almost always make more with a traditional program, than you would with contextual advertising.

With affiliate programs, you are able to present your visitors with products you decide fitting for them, with contextual ads, the script does this for you. While this is (or should be) highly relevant ads, you still lack the control over the specific ads. With sites in small niches – or with low amount of traffic – the importance of higher commissions are necessary to keep the site profitable.

Getting only a few cents per click will not cut it if you only have a few visitors per day, but if you can present them all with a product they want, you can make quite a bit of money.

It’s up to you to decide what products are likely to be of interest to your viewers, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Try new or additional affiliate programs or try some contextual ads once you have some traffic. Find out what suits your site best, every site – and every niche – is unique.

Affiliate Marketing For 2007 - What Can We Expect?

2007 is here and the world of affiliate marketing has changed - somewhat for the better and somewhat for the worse. As a business affiliate marketing is still more than viable but the days of the truly easy money have gone. If you want to make money online now you better be prepared to do some work - that doesn't mean you need to turn yourself into some kind of affiliate slave - just don't think that push button solutions work anymore; they don't.

So what did 2006 bring us? 2006 was, without doubt, the year of the Product Launch.

Overpriced, overstuffed, overhyped product launches happened, it seems, almost every week. People queued up to wait for these products to be released and then bought them for thousands and thousands of dollars. The sad part is that 90% of those buyers will never, ever put any of those products to use so it's wasted money. The "guru" types are quite happy banking their profits either way. Next week they'll promote somebody else's product to their own mailing list and the incestuous little circle begins again.

The end result was that the product launches were successful but the market was saturated with new products and the wannabe affiliate marketers have now become apathetic and somewhat deaf to the claims of many of the guru types. People can only hear so many sales offers before they eventually stop caring altogether. Towards the end of 2006 people didn't want to hear anything else about product launches. Personally I unsubscribed from at least a dozen lists - I have better things to do than read sales pitches all day. Maybe this is something you should consider too?

No problem the gurus think. Membership sites is the way to go - 2007 will be the year of membership sites. For just $800 per month you can get access to blah, blah, blah, blah. So the tired, weary (and yes even poorer) masses signed up for these membership sites to get access to the super duper secret hidden knowledge that they all share in their private midnight meetings.

Masses of people once again signed up for these hugely expensive membership sites and once again many of them will get zero benefit from the programs - it's way above their heads and they simply won't "get" most of it.

So what can you do to make sure your affiliate business keeps driving forward or gets started in the first place? Stick to the basics. There are no magic answers to be found in super secret membership sites or $897 DVD/ebook packages. The basics of affiliate marketing have always been the same:

1. You need to have a website - you must have an online presence of some kind.

2. You need to have traffic coming to that website - either through paid search or natural search.

3. You need to continually promote your website to ensure it continues to receive traffic.

Where most people fail is...... at the start line. They never, ever get started. Why? Because they're busy looking for the "secret" that will make all of this affiliate maketing mumbo jumbo easy for them and they can start making money without really trying. Let me guess you bought an ebook, a DVD package and membership to some of the bigger marketing sites? You read the ebook and watched the DVDs and felt inspired. You now sit in the forums as often as possible to see what's going on and what you can learn. Every single minute you spend in 99% of those forums is wasted. It's several more hours that you could have spent actually building your own little online empire instead of just *thinking* about starting your own online business.

You're not alone - there are tens of thousands of people out there just like you! They want to start making money online but just don't know where to start. Your first step is to find somebody who is truly successful as an affiliate marketer and learn from them. Become brilliant at the basics of affiliate marketing before doing anything else. To do this learn from somebody who's brilliant at the basics themselves.

As an affiliate marketer, there are many ways in which you can increase your earnings. Most of these techniques and tactics can be learned easily. There is no need to go anywhere or any further. They are available online, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

One of the easiest ways to increase your affiliate marketing bottom line and improve sales is through the use of product recommendations. Many experienced marketers know that this is one of the most effective ways to promote a certain product.

If you have gained your customers trust, they will also trust your recommendations. You have to be very careful in using this approach, though. If you start recommending everything, your credibility will start to wear thin. This is true especially when your recommendations seem to be exaggerated and without much merit.

Don't be afraid to point out things that you do not like about a given product or service. Rather than lose any points for you, this will make your recommendation seem more realistic and will tend to increase your credibility.

Furthermore, if your visitors are really interested in your offer, they will appreciate learning what is good about the product, what is not so good, and how the product will benefit them.

Keep in mind these prospects are not stupid. They are actually turning to experts and may already know the things that you know. If you back up your claims with hard facts and data, they will gladly accept your offers. But if you don’t, they are smart enough to try and look at your competitors and what they are offering.

When recommending a product, it is also important that you give out promotional freebies. People are already familiar with the concept of offering freebies to promote products. But very few people do this to promote affiliate products. Try to offer freebies that are compatible with the products or services offered for sale.

Before you add recommendations to your product, it is a given that you should try and test the product and support yourself. Do not run the risk of promoting junk products and services. Just think about how long it took you to build credibility and trust among your visitors. All that it takes to destroy it is one big mistake on your part.

If possible, have recommendations of products that you have 100% confidence in. Test the product support before you begin to ensure that the people you are referring it to would not be left high and dry when a problem suddenly arose.

You hear of people making a killing on the internet by selling other peoples product. First you may ask is it true and the second question is how do they find the right products to sell?

The answer to the first question is yes there are a lot of people who are making a handsome living online selling other peoples products.

The answer to the second question is not quite so simple. There are certain guidelines you should follow to make sure you are not selling a product that will not convert. I will show you what to consider before picking a product to promote.

If you are looking at promoting a product you should ask if there is a cost involved to sell the product. There are plenty of products that you can promote and sell without any upfront cost so do not consider any products that you have to pay an initial fee.

What is the products conversion ratio? Try to find out how many visitors are sent to the site before a sale is made. This way you can make an educated guess how much traffic you will have to send to meet you financial goals. Obviously you want to go with the product that has a higher conversion ratio.

How does the webmaster track referrals and how long do the referrals stay in the system? Most people will not buy the first time that they go to a site because they do not have a level of trust yet. If somebody is really interested in the product they could come back to the site and make a purchase at a later date. What you need to know is the time period that you still get credit for the sale.

Some companies only offer a commission on the first visit while others offer much longer terms such as 90 to 120 days. Again, the longer the time period the better it is for you.

Idea #2 – Add a signature file to your E-mail

This is a very easy and perfect way to give your affiliate program a little boost. Every time you send an e-mail your ad is attached at the bottom. First of all, I need to be upfront with you and say that in some respects the word "Biggest" is a tad deceptive.

Why?

Well, as you will discover during this article series, it is often the “little things" that make the "big difference" when it comes to making headway in Affiliate Marketing.

Okay let's begin with ...

MISTAKE NUMBER ONE: Giving up too soon.

Yeah, yeah I can hear you already. "That's no big secret".

Well, if that's what you are thinking, then I rest my case. You agree with me then. The fact that something is obvious doesn't mean that it isn't significant or important.

Please allow me to explain.

Every successful Affiliate Marketer that I know has had to pay their dues. Some pay them quickly, it seems. They were able to start making money with their Affiliate Marketing business within a few months or so. Like I say, these are the lucky ones.

I know a couple of folks who told me that they didn't really start seeing any consistent, "real" money until after almost two years. The time table varies depending on the individual.

Let me put it a different way. The absolute biggest mistake that most newcomers to the world of Affiliate Marketing fail is because they throw in the towel too soon!

Whatever the reason for it is irrelevant .......

Maybe their expectations were unreasonable - they were expecting to make billions of bucks quick with no effort.

Maybe they just decided Affiliate Marketing wasn't enjoyable. That's fine; AM is a tough business that requires a lot of hard work. Long tedious hours of it. Day after day after day.

Newcomers need to keep at it until they finally "crack the code". Experienced AM folks need to keep at it monitoring & tweaking their different efforts, coming up with new strategies, etc.

Internet affiliate marketing is a huge industry. There are literally thousands of people who consider themselves affiliate marketers who are making a living online. If you are an affiliate marketer, you advertise other people’s products and when a sale is made because of your advertising, you make a commission. The most common way for an affiliate marketer to advertise is through pay per click programs such as Google Adwords.

It is a great way for someone to make a living. It is also much more difficult then one might imagine. It is very easy to get blinded by all the money making possibilities as an affiliate marketer and quickly get in over your head with advertising costs. I am a beginning affiliate marketer and in the two months that I have been trying this out, I have definitely spent more then I have earned. I have also learned a great deal from the guides that I have purchased.

When I first started looking to make money online, I found affiliate marketing. I thought that it would be a piece of cake. I spent about $500 on advertising and didn’t sell a single thing. It was incredibly discouraging. So I gave up for a while and then came back to it. I bought a couple of affiliate guides and started to put into practice some of the methods explained in them. And you know what? I started to make some money. It is very exciting when you see your hard work pay off.

Affiliate marketing is hard work. Do not be fooled by the claims of 15 minutes a day. At some point, that may be all the time you will need to spend, but when you are starting out, it is a much greater time commitment if you want to be successful.

There is a lot of research that goes into finding the products and the keywords and watching that you don’t overspend on advertising. There are techniques that you can learn to improve the rate in which people click on the ads that you place to sell the affiliate products.

The main or most popular way to advertise affiliate products is through Google Adwords. This is an advertising program through Google. Adwords in itself can be a complicated process to learn the rules and regulations that will keep your ads from being disapproved.

Google also gives you a quality score which affects the price you pay for your keywords as well as your ad placement. A person with a better quality score will pay a lower price for a high placed ad. Getting a high quality score is very important to keep your advertising costs down.

If you are interested in internet affiliate marketing, it is a good idea to learn all you can before becoming involved so that you don’t blow through your budget before you see any profits. Most everyone that has a computer has used Google. The reasons to use Google are given. Google Adwords is the number one place to advertise on the internet. Kyle and Carson teach you how to set up an Adwords account the right way.

Actual screen shots with step by step instructions are provided to make things really easy. This is very helpful for beginners.

Next, the authors have you set up a Google account for practice. This will get you familiar with Google Adwords and your account will be ready to go. It is nice having the actual screen shots with detailed instructions to follow.

Tips on creating web pages and targeted content are provided. There are several tips on writing effective reviews to increase affiliate sales. Sample review pages are also included.

The authors, Kyle and Carson, give you some basic tips that they followed for success. Kyle and Carson do respond to emails. They have answered all of my questions.

This is a nice bonus. This section teaches you how to make money online for a small cost or free. Since I am trying to keep advertising costs as low as possible, I have used some of the techniques in this chapter, and they have worked very well for me. A glossary is included at the end.

I think Beating Adwords is an excellent program. It does cost some money to get started with adwords. Fortunately, Beating Adwords has several tips to keep control of your advertising costs. Also, if you are looking for ideas to keep your advertising costs as low as possible, the bonus section will be very helpful. Several low cost and free advertising techniques are included.

As I mentioned, they have worked very well for me. If you want to get started making money online, this program will definitely guide you in the right direction. I highly recommend Beating Adwords.

In other words, when the reader has finished reading the article and you have piqued their interest, they can click on your link in the resource box and visit your website.

Article directories are also great for getting back links to your site, which many of us know is great for search engine rankings. In article directories, you can give other webmasters permission to publish your article on their website or blog.

The only stipulation is that they must keep the resource box intact. This means that when the webmaster publishes your article, they are providing you a back link from their site to yours that equals more traffic!

Let’s discuss four golden rules that will make sure you are a successful affiliate and will help you avoid getting “sidetracked.” Many of these principles have been “time tested,” by thousands of affiliate marketers, to measure exact results of affiliate campaigns on websites, Blogs, forums, and in Ezines.

Insert links that relate exactly to your content. Be very strategic when placing links within your text. Use affiliate links to guide your readers to seek more information about subjects that strike their interest.

Visualize your site and links to be a path for enthusiasts to enter. You can use this same principle when you design your Ezine. You have to make it interesting and your affiliate site, or Ezine does not need to have answers, but it does need to capture their interest.

Give visitors what they seek, but remember that the actual retailer must close the sale. It is not up to affiliates to close the sale for retailers. A good affiliate site will have interesting information for visitors, but does not need to focus on the sales process. If you read the retailers site, and it doesn’t convince you to opt-in for a newsletter or buy, you might want to consider another affiliate program.

Affiliates supply information that focuses on a specific niche, and this is what most “web surfers” are looking for. Your information must be exactly related to the product. Promote a product that excites you and that you know something about. If you are excited about the money, then take the time to understand what the product you are endorsing does. How does it work? What are the benefits? How does it solve your visitor’s problems? You don’t have to sell, but your information should spark your reader’s interest.

Chasing the “Next big thing” is very common, but very often - it is a waste of time. The newest, and the greatest, Internet and affiliate marketing, ideas require us to stay current, but stay focused on your purpose, niche, and conversion rates.

“Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket,” is a useful piece of advice for any affiliate. You should have “multiple streams of income” on your site. Don’t count on one affiliate program for your income, but don’t spread yourself thin, either.

So, how many affiliate programs are too much to handle? Only you know the answer, but anything beyond six to ten affiliate programs is much like a full time job. I have seen too many people, who fill up all of their time with work, and don’t get paid enough for it. You have to put a value on what your time is worth, allow for “play time,” and enjoy your family.

Also, be aware that some of the major retail companies periodically leave Link Share, Commission Junction, or one of the big affiliate managers. The problem with this is all of the links that you have taken the time to build into your websites, forums, or Blogs. When a retailer quits working with the manager, this leaves all of their former affiliates, “out in the cold,” with many back links back to the retailer.

Sometimes affiliate managers, of the big retailers, fire low-producing affiliates. If you are not producing affiliate sales - they give you a trial period to produce results. Many of the big retailers are only looking for super affiliates, with multiple web sites, Blogs, and a strong, but ethical, Email marketing program.

Usually, they don’t inform you of this policy, which hurts new upstart affiliates. You put in all the work of creating back links to a retailer, who fires you in 30 days.

Therefore, do the research on the affiliate program. If you ask them, they might come clean. Many of the “Mom and Pop” small business affiliate programs are easily accessible, won’t fire you, and will do their best to give you the tools to get started in the affiliate marketing business.

Here are some questions to consider when choosing affiliate programs to join. Does the affiliate program provide you with any content for your sites and Ezines? Can you get answers by Email or phone? Does the affiliate program have a Blog or a forum? Unless, you are an experienced super affiliate, you will need some kind of support. This is why you should take your time, when choosing the right affiliate program for you.

Lastly, some affiliate programs will tell you that banner links are, “The greatest thing since sliced bread.” Beware of putting up too many banner links. Use banners to break up your text, but don’t count on them for commissions.

My reason is: When was the last time you clicked on a banner? Most of us haven’t clicked on a banner in the last 10 years. In fact, the conversion rates of banners are extremely poor. You can count on your text links to produce far better conversion rates and more affiliate commissions for you.

Here’s why: If you can get original content, which is written by you, or a reputable copywriter; your site will draw attention from search engine “web spiders.” These spiders or bots get your site indexed and ranked.

How come so many affiliates are unable to make consistent and increasing profits from affiliate programs?

If you look around you’ll find that the Guru’s seem to do it without effort, yet if you talk to the average affiliate marketer their statistics at best roller-coaster and at worst stay the same or decline over time.

The answer, in a nutshell, is simply this: the unsuccessful or stagnant affiliate doesn’t invest enough money back into marketing.

But how do you know how much to invest, people sometimes ask me. Well, fortunately there is formula you can use to make sure that you are always continuing to make more money as an affiliate marketer.

Let’s use an analogy to get started on this. Lets suppose that you just bought yourself a brand new Mercedes. It’s in your driveway and draws the attention of anyone who happens by. It’s beautiful, and sleek, and fast. But let’s suppose you aren’t willing to put fuel in the gas tank. You love the car, but you aren’t willing to invest in it.

You are going to go nowhere. You’ll only be able to dream of driving this sleek vehicle though country lanes, past your best friend’s house, to social gatherings, etc. The reality though, will be that you and your car will stagnate and you will get little pleasure from it.

It’s the same with some affiliate marketers. They have some great affiliate programs they could be making lots of money with, but they don’t want to put money into the one vehicle that will make them a profit – advertising.

Let’s say you can make a commission of $3,000 every time you make an affiliate sale (this is not an imaginary figure. I am affiliated with a company that actually offers this commission). And let’s say you made your first sale. Suddenly you have $3,000. Should you go out and spend it on a new flat screen TV? Or should you reinvest it in marketing your business?

I’m sure you know instinctively what the right answer is. That’s right, you should re-invest it.
Here’s why.

Let’s say you put that $3,000 straight back into a marketing campaign. This can easily produce 3 – 6 sales. That’s $9,000 to $18,000 profit!

Let’s be conservative and suppose you profit $15,000, or a factor of 1:5. Here’s what we are now going to do with that $15,000 to guarantee our continued success.

The Affiliate Marketing Formula (you may want to make separate notes to keep track of how this system works)

We are going to take the original $3,000 and put it in the bank, and reallocate 80%, or $12,000, back into a new affiliate marketing campaign.

Given the same 1:5 profit factor this marketing investment should conservatively produce about a $60,000 profit return.

Next take out 40%, or $24,000 and reallocate the remainder, 60%, or $36,000 into your next affiliate marketing campaign. This will mean you now have $27,000 in your bank account (less money to eat).

And we continue. The $36,000 we allocated to this campaign should produce approximately $180,000. From this we are going to put a mere 40% into our next affiliate ad campaign – that’s $72,000. Now we should have about $145,000 in the bank.

But we’re not done yet. That $72,000 should reap around $360,000 in profits. We’ll take 80% of our profits, or $288,000 and reallocate a mere 20%, or $72,000, into a new affilaite advertising campaign.

By now you should have about $433,000 in the bank.

This time you have earned about a $360,000 profit return. We are going to take out another 80%, or $288,000 and stick it in the bank, allocating a meager 20% to our next affiliate ad campaign – that’s $72,000 back into direct marketing. We’ll now have around $721,000 in our bank account.

And if we do the same thing again, using 20% of our profits for advertising costs, we’ll end up with around $1,900,000 (over one million dollars) in the bank.

The outcome

Now, although I can’t guarantee these exact figures, they are consistent with affiliate marketers who use this system. These are the people you read about in the sales ads and in magazines and ezines. These are the marketers who seem to be doing the impossible. Fact is, their success is inextricably linked to marketing and the way they allocate their profits.

And you don’t need to have a $3,000 affiliate product markup. This formula will work with $3,000 or $300 affiliate profit markup, or even less. Don’t worry about the figures, concentrate on the formula.

Bottom line. You will come out far ahead of the crowd financially by employing this approach to your affiliate marketing efforts.

Affiliate marketing essentially pays you a finder's-fee to bring new clients to a business. So you might get paid a certain amount for each visit ("pay per click"), for each person who registers ("pay per lead"), or for each customer or sale ("pay per sale").

Amazon.com is a good example. Anyone with a website can join Amazon.com’s affiliate program. There are a few software packages that will build an entire website based on a topic you choose. Some are much more expensive than others. I decided to try HyperVRE because it’s free. Other software packages I reviewed, such as Adsense-Realestate.com, cost as much as $397 and charge an additional monthly membership fee.

First, you select a topic you would like to use for your website. We’ll use "burn fat." The software will then search several article databases and build each page of your website based on the titles of each article. For example, one page of our "burn fat" website will be an article called "Best Exercise to Burn Fat."

The most powerful feature of HyperVRE is the ability to automatically include AdSense ads in every page as well as inserting your affiliate links to related Amazon.com and ClickBank products. All you have to do is enter your Amazon.com and ClickBank affiliate IDs into HyperVRE, and the software generates your affiliate links on the fly.

HyperVRE is very powerful in terms of time-saving features and ease of use, but it’s weak in many areas—most notably, website design. The software includes several different layouts for potential websites. None of them are visually appealing. And unless you know HTML, you’ll be stuck with a below-average, unprofessional-looking website.

Hosting is another issue. Yes, the HyperVRE software is free and you can create 100 different websites—all free. But your free websites will be stuck on your computer’s hard drive until you actually pay for hosting. This is where the cost can get you.

I recommend using HyperVRE only if you are willing to pay for website hosting. If you decide to use HyperVRE, I recommend 1and1.com for website hosting. 1and1.com allows you to host 20 different domain names for only $2.24/month.

Most people don’t realize how easy it is to make your own website for free—and even make money at it. I recommend Blogger.com first and foremost, and then you can build from there. It just isn’t that hard to make your own website—for free—and start earning easy money.

Affiliate Marketing: Secrets of the Super Affiliates

How does one Super Affiliate earn twenty times as much, in affiliate commissions, as most affiliates? One of the biggest reasons for this is action. Super affiliates do not hesitate to take action. They know exactly what they want. They have a team assembled to build a website, write content, maintain search engine optimization, and run an automated Email marketing program.

Super Affiliates understand goal setting skills. They map out a project, in a specific sequence, build it, maintain it, and move on to the next affiliate project. Consider this: Most Super Affiliates are general contractors in the “virtual world” we know as the Internet.

Most of us are not a “one man show.” Realize what your strengths are, and take the time to outsource work, which consumes too much time or is not cost effective for you to do.

Day dreaming, procrastinating, or putting things off is fine, when you are on vacation. Otherwise, do the most difficult tasks first or pay somebody to do it for you. If you day dream too much, you may not be able to afford a vacation.

Once your web site is up and running, you should install some tracking software. This will show you where your traffic is coming from, what keywords are producing, where you a losing your prospects, how much traffic you are getting, and give you some future direction.

Has Google changed the rules for affiliates? For “organic” search engine optimization, not too much has immediately changed. Google has been, and still is, looking for quality content, and your affiliate site must be relevant to your particular niche. In regard to Google’s pay per click program, which we know as AdWords, much has changed for affiliates quite recently.

The important issue is to understand the new rules, and why, because Yahoo and some of the smaller pay per click programs might just follow this same path. The days of putting an affiliate page together with “tons of hyperlinks,” and little or no content are, for the most part, over.

This will only hurt those affiliates who have not adjusted to the new rules. In truth, you should be familiar with, or have tried, the products and services you recommend to others, for your affiliate commissions. If this is so, all you need to do is write a review of each one of these products or services. Writing relevant content has been a foundation for search engine optimization and is worth the exercise. If you don’t have the time, hire a copywriter or a personal assistant.

What should you do to develop an affiliate site that sells? Here is a Super Affiliate secret to success: You must have a newsletter for Email marketing. You must be ethical in your Email marketing efforts. Permission based, double confirmed, opt-in, Email marketing will help you avoid any Spam accusations.

If a lot of people are searching for information on that product and you offer it for sale on your site, then all those searches might help drive your web site to the top of the search results -- meaning a whole lot of extra traffic for you!

These ads are paid for by businesses that use Google's pay-per-click program, AdWords. So if your site sells a book on how to recognize authentic baseball cards, for example, the ads that appear at your site might sell baseball cards.

As one of Google's AdSense publishers, you earn money every time a visitor to your site clicks on one of the AdWords ads on your site. If you're getting a lot of targeted traffic, and if these visitors are interested in the products being advertised in the Google ads, then that could mean a healthy new source of extra income for you! There are a number of good reasons to start your Internet advertising campaign with Google AdSense:

* You can choose where on your web page the ads will appear, leaving you in control of how Google uses your site to advertise.

* You can choose different ad formats (like skyscrapers and banners) and colors for your Google Ads. This way, you can make sure that the ads fit into the overall design of your web pages.

* You can track your earnings and figure out how to maximize your AdSense profits by testing the positioning, format, and appearance of the ads. Google provides all the stats you need in one place, which makes it easy for you to test what's working and what's not.

One thing to be aware of, though -- Google ads don't work for all kinds of sites. If, say, you run a high-end tailoring business, this type of Internet advertising likely won't suit the type of service you offer or the general design of your web site. So if you add them to your site, be sure to test them! You don't want to lose credibility with your target market -- it's just not worth it!

3. Approach companies directly to ask if you can advertise for them

If your site is already getting lots of traffic and making a decent number of sales, then another way to find products to promote on your site is to look for sites that target the same niche market as you do and offer products that are complementary (as opposed to competitive!) with your own.

For example, if you own a bridal shop, you could approach a local florist to see if they'd like to advertise their wedding bouquets on your web site. After all, people who are planning weddings are probably also looking for information on where to get their flowers done. An ad on your site would also be seen as an implicit recommendation of their product, and could send a ton of relieved brides to their web site, ready to buy. And the more successful your ads for them are, the more you can end up charging for those ads.

Or if you sell car detailing services, you could approach a local auto parts store -- or a local mechanic -- and ask them if they'd be interested in placing an ad on your site. You already know that your target audience will probably be interested in the products they offer, so it would be easy to show them why an ad on your pages could help boost their sales.

Be sure to contact potential Internet advertising partners in a professional manner to discuss your ideas for a partnership. Call them on the phone instead of just emailing them, so your communication is more personal and more professional. Be ready to supply them with tons of information about your business and your traffic. The more information you can give them, the more likely they are to consider your offer.

And above all, make sure they have a solid reputation. If you end up partnering with a questionable company, their activities could reflect poorly on YOUR business! You can also propose a joint-venture relationship, in which you advertise their products on your site in exchange for them doing the same for you. In this situation, they won't pay you for the ads.

However, the extra traffic they send your way could end up generating even more revenues! Just be sure to look for possible joint-venture partners who are getting roughly the same amount of traffic as you are (or maybe even a little more!). If they're TOO big, they probably won't be interested in doing business with you. But if they're not getting any traffic at all, then it probably won't be worth your while to partner up with them.

4. Sign up for a blog-specific ad program

If you already have a blog you should consider signing up to feature blog-specific ads on your site.The kind of ads you place on your blog really depends on the type of content you write or the products you sell. The key is to consider the kinds of ads that YOUR target audience will find valuable.

For example, if you're a fishing guide, and your blog is all about some of your recent fishing trips -- the kind of stuff anglers want to read about! -- then the ads you have on your blog should be for products that your market wants to buy, like rods, reels, and tackle. Then, because they're all fired up about fishing after reading your great blog, they might be tempted to click on one of your ads and make a purchase!

* Get advertisers interested in your blog with a simple link they can use to contact you for rates and requirements. This link can be a simple message saying, "Click here to find out how to advertise on this blog!" That way, anyone visiting your site is free to discuss advertising opportunities with you.

* Sign up with an advertiser-publisher connection program like BlogAds( http://www.blogads.com ) or AdBrite ( http://www.adbrite.com ), and get listed in their publishers directory.

One important note, however: with these types of ads, the advertisers look through listings of THOUSANDS of blogs to choose the "right" people to promote their products. Unless you're getting thousands of visitors a day, they might not be all that interested in doing business with you. If you don't already have a blog, you should definitely consider starting one. They're one of the hottest traffic- generating strategies on the Web today!

5. How to present ads to your market in ways that maximize their effectiveness

Have you ever clicked on a web site that seems to have more ads than it has actual content of any kind? Sometimes you can't even figure out what the site is supposed to be about! If you assault your visitors with a dozen ads for totally different products, not only are you going to totally confuse them, you're going to drive them away from your site in droves -- and once they leave, they'll never be back!

Remember: your site needs to grab your market's attention and make them want to stay! If you want to place ads on your site for items that complement your product, that's fine. Just be sure your ads aren't tacky, or overly distracting, or -- worst of all -- that they don't ruin the credibility of your main site sales message.

If you're placing Google AdSense (or other contextual text ads) on your site, you have some control on how they look -- but not much. They're still quite obviously ads. You can, however, choose colors and sizes and layouts for the ads (banner, skyscraper, etc.) that suit the rest of your site design. No matter what kind of ads you're placing on your site, make sure they are as discreet and tasteful as possible.

Try placing ads in the right or left margins, where they won't compete with your own images or copy. When you're promoting affiliate products or advertising other companies' products for them directly, you have a lot more freedom to place the ads on your site in creative ways. You can put up something as simple as a link to the other company's sales site, or even something as detailed as a product review.

In fact, product reviews are one of the best possible ways to get your target market interested in the item you're advertising.Simply post a detailed, helpful analysis of the product -- and a summary of all its benefits -- and publish it directly on your web site, or even in your blog or newsletter. Reviews come off as more of a recommendation than an ad, which gives them credibility in your visitors' eyes.

Which brings me to a really important point: if you're going to endorse a product, make sure that the product is something you've actually TRIED. Unless you've used the product and believe in the things you're saying or publishing about it, you could stand to lose some serious credibility in your customers' eyes!

Final thoughts

I can't emphasize enough how important it is to make sure that you have established your OWN business before you consider advertising for other companies on your web site. It's not a matter of putting up a few ads and grabbing a paycheck -- it takes a lot of research and testing on an already ESTABLISHED site to make even the best Internet advertising strategies truly pay off.

If you don't have a regular flow of visitors to your site, no one is going to be checking out YOUR products, let alone the ads you have for other people's products! You may also find that you have a target audience that resists the presence of ads on a web site. If you're putting them off by placing ads on your pages, then you could end up losing more customers and revenue than you actually gain! To make sure this doesn't happen, remember to always TEST every single aspect of each new ad campaign you run.

Only try one technique at a time -- that's the ONLY way to effectively track how successful the advertising is for you AND the company whose products you're promoting. Internet Marketing: A Look At The Basics - The Internet Marketing Course

You know, I have been an internet marketer for almost ten years now. I have reached a point where I actually support myself, and quite well, I might add, from my internet businesses.
It wasn't always so. I made a lot of dumb, and sometimes ignorant (the two are not the same) mistakes along the way.

Somehow, I managed to learn enough about internet marketing to get successful at it in spite of myself. However, in the process, I paid for a lot of junk and wasted my time on a lot of things that didn't work. I usually refer to this as "accidental tuition".

As a result, I get a little irked when someone approaches me, or posts a message on a forum, saying or implying that they want to get into or have found an internet business that "makes money" or "guarantees" success. I have found that a successful internet business is just like the brick-and-mortar kind. It takes dedication, motivation, inspiration, hard work...and sometimes blind luck.

A successful internet marketing strategy is just like its non-internet business counterpart. It is made up of several factors, and does not simply consist of putting a guy on the sidewalk with a sign on a stick, or building a website and submitting it to search engines. Most people would not expect the sign on the stick to work marketing miracles, but, probably in internet ignorance, they tend to believe the website + search engine = success scenario.

Many who read this article think that way, at least until they read what I wrote in the paragraph above this one. Despite the negativity of the previous paragraph, however, I am not trying to discourage anyone from forming an internet business or diving into the internet marketing pool.

It's fun in here, and the more the merrier! I DO want to dispel unrealistic expectations of what is involved in running an internet business in general, and what is involved in internet marketing in particular.

A point I am gradually sneaking up on is that, like many things in life, successful internet marketing may not be as simple as it looks. Nor will one single strategy work for every internet business at all times. It will be necessary to learn many things and some, which may seem simple and basic, may need to be modified to meet the needs of each unique internet business.

The bright side is that many techniques are tried and true and will probably serve anyone well, although they might work better for one business than another.

Internet marketing itself can seem relatively simple. You start with a good product or service, create quality marketing vehicles (most important being the website), and then you lead people to the website. In fact, that's all that internet marketing is about...getting interested people to your website.

How do you do that? Well, that's where things get complicated. You can use Pay-Per-Click search engines, search engine optimization, opt-in mailing lists, free gifts, business cards, flyers, contests, rewards! The list is bounded only by your imagination.

There are four basic ways to acquire the mass of background information you need for a successful internet marketing strategy:

1. Go through the internet university of hard knocks, like I, and so many others, have. The tuition is high, and it will probably take you a few years to get your diploma.

2. Go into research. That is, read everything you can find on the internet, running an internet business, and internet marketing. This too will take a long period of time, and you will still probably have to go out of pocket as you test your learning at various points.

3. Find a mentor. There are people on the internet who have been successful and who share this information with others. Quite often, even they charge a fee, but your opportunity for success might be higher. However, it is difficult to find someone to be your mentor. They are running their own businesses.

4. Take an internet marketing course. If you can find the right course, even though you will have to pay for the course, the information you can glean can save you hundred or even thousands of dollars as you wade into the fast running stream of internet business opportunities.

I have taken three of these courses myself, and wish I had known of their existence when I first started trying to make money on the internet. I could have save thousands of dollars and hours of time, and an immeasurable amount of frustration.

Simply taking an internet marketing course will not guarantee you success, of course. In fact, you will begin to realize how many ways you can fail! However, you will learn important lessons that you can use to create a successful internet business. I do NOT recommend trying to learn it on your own.

Web Success Secret #4) Monetization Will Flow When All Steps Have Been Followed.

You may be a bit surprised to learn that monetization is the last of the 4 steps. Many business owners position monetization as their first goal. Everything they do from conception of the business is geared towards making money. After all, that is the point of owning your own web business, right?

When I first learned of the four step approach to making successful web businesses, I was a bit skeptical. I have never heard of such a risky business idea- think of making money as the last goal. That sounded absurd to me! In all of my small business education the emphasis was on profit charts and balance sheets and projected annual returns.

Being online does change some things. One of those things is how you start and run a long term and profitable business.

Following the process of starting a web business often involved very little capital. The risk is typically much lower and the return on investment arrives in a shorter time span. Because of this you have a unique advantage to allow the natural progression of your site visitors come into play.

Let’s back up a bit and review. People search for information, not products, online. They are not looking to spend money. They type in their search query at the search engines. This is the natural progression of an online visitor. They want information, they find you, they receive answers from you, they develop trust in you and think of you as an expert. It is only when those criteria have been met that you gain customers.

Let me repeat that last line because it is the most important line in the entire 4 part series: it is only when the first three steps have been met that you earn income. The goods news is once you finish the first three steps (content, traffic, and pre-selling) you will continue to pull in hot, targeted traffic from the search engines month after month. All of this traffic is totally free! No advertising costs! Monetization naturally occurs.

There are a few things you can do to help increase your conversion rates:

- Only recommend 2-3 services or products. Having more than this makes it difficult for your visitor to decide which is best for them. It is also very difficult for you to recommend them all.

- Place graphics of your product or service on each page of your content website. This allows visitors to see your offerings more than once.

- Write a monthly newsletter and provide excellent content. Also provide a special on one of your services/products.

- Test everything- price points, graphics, sales page, etc.

How Do You Convey Credibility And Integrity On The Internet?

There is something about this electronic medium we operate in every day that makes people skeptical. It's not just having to enter your credit card number into cyber space, or worry about having your identity stolen. Those problems are all too real and we learn to shield ourselves from them, so that we can carry on. But, even when we do, it's still hard to make judgments about people, or about another business, when you only deal with them in the online environment.

In the offline world we have the benefit of looking others in the eye and using our experience to make a judgment about them. Even in our initial encounter with someone, we get to size him up - to have a first impression. But, how are visitors to your web site assessing your credibility and integrity? How do you overcome the basic inconsistency that trust is something that you earn over time, with having only seconds to convey it on the internet?

There are studies out there that provide some excellent thoughts about how to design and build a web site to enhance its credibility and foster trust; you can do a Google search under "web site credibility" and see these for yourself. What they will tell you, though, is that there are a few key design things that go a long way to establishing your credibility online and making it easier for site visitors to trust you and your business.

Make sure the site looks professional, is easy to navigate, and that everything works properly. Make sure you provide a clear path for online customers to communicate with you. Make sure that your content establishes both your own credibility and that of any other contributors to your site. Make sure that you change your content frequently and keep it up to date.

These are all common sense steps and they are important; any good site designer will advise you on them and implement what he can for you. Spending the time, or the money to build a site that is flawed in the way it works will clearly undermine the credibility of your business over time and site visitors will never trust you as a result. But, there is more to the issue of conveying integrity than site design.

Given the nature of my business, I spend a lot of time online and see many other sites. I am constantly checking to see how others do things and collecting the best information I can find for my customers. I suppose each of us has our own opinion about what constitutes a "good site," or what makes us distrust any site. There are several things, though, that tip the scales for me and make me immediately suspicious, or not trust the people that are presumably behind the electronic facade they are asking me to use.

The thing that makes me most distrust any online business is feeling "tricked" by them. Some sites are designed to force the user to drill down into the site to find what he wants. When you get to what you’re looking for, though, you discover that you have to register, or provide information about yourself and / or your business, or worse yet pay for something you expected to get for free.

When this happens to me, I leave immediately. I don't mind that someone wants a little information, or charges for a product or service that they provide; they just need to tell me that upfront, if they want me to trust their business.

Second, I do not like to be presented with any obstacles in communicating with an online business. It amazes me how many of them create these roadblocks - not making the contact process obvious on the site, not providing an e-mail address and forcing you to go through the site, not being able to communicate with a person, not having an easy way to follow up with them, if they don't respond, not having telephone contact available, etc.

You know it's intentional. You know this process is designed to make things easier and more efficient for the company, than for you, the customer.

Third, it frustrates me to no end to be disappointed by the quality of the supporting material on a site. While there is a huge amount of information to be found online, frankly, most of it is useless and it's there because the business owner read someplace that he should have a lot of "content" on his site to draw people in and to enhance his search engine placement.

For me, it totally undermines the credibility of a site, when it provides "articles" that have no substance, or worse yet, when the articles are just blatant commercials for the company's products. That's why at Business Advisor Online we read every article before we post it, include less than 20% of what we read, and provide both a summary and a rating of every article, so the reader doesn't waste his time.

Fourth, when I see a lot of advertisements on a site, my first inclination is to bolt; I try to dig a little deeper, but my antenna goes up when I see that I am going to have to wade through all those ads. I understand that letting other companies advertise on your site is a viable business model and, if it's done reasonably and the site is still providing me with real value, I'll tolerate it.

But, sometimes the ads are so pervasive that you can't easily tell what the site can actually do for you, or what its purpose is; and the worst situation is not being able to clearly see the difference between an advertisement and content. Just remember - when you see a lot of ads on a site, the person paying for them is the real customer, not you!

Finally, not being able to clearly discern what the site's business model is and how it makes money makes me suspicious. I understand that most people are not going to have this one on their list; but, I believe there are only a three reasons to have a web site to begin with - to sell more, to enhance efficiency, and to provide better service - and if I can't figure out which one the site is trying to accomplish, it makes me a little uncomfortable.

At the risk of oversimplifying this credibility and trust issue, the real solution is to pay attention to it - to make it a point to probe how credible you actually are. As your site changes and evolves, keep testing it and find ways to get feedback from visitors about what they think. Give them a way to "look you in the eye" and you'll have a better chance of earning their trust.

• Give some valuable information on your topic to your new subscribers for free in order to build a trusting relationship with them. Relationship marketing is an extremely effective form of marketing and has the power to build you a vast fortune if applied correctly.

• Create an e-book, CD or DVD on solving the most burning problems that people have in your industry. For example if your industry is the Golfing industry then maybe a product on improving your golf swing would be one that solves a burning problem.

• Write a direct response styled sales letter and add a Paypal button at the end of it so you can collect payments. Again, this is a learned skill.

• Start selling it to your subscribers, and then to the rest of the world!

Now I’ll be honest that list is a VERY rough one but as you can see, it is extremely simple. The fact is that there are many smaller things that must be accomplished within each of those listed and even more that I haven’t mentioned here.

It would take books and books of writing to accomplish that and this is just a short article.

The fact of the matter is this, my friend…

As you can see it's obvious why internet marketing is now so popular, and will only continue to grow in the future. However, if you want to be successful marketing online there is a steep learning curve, and a lot of people simply give up after a few weeks because they haven't made any money. It takes time to learn how to be successful. Experienced marketers have endless resources they can draw on, that will most likely have come from years of testing and researching.

Setting up your ecommerce site was no simple process, but in creating a successful ecommerce business, setting up the site is only the first step. Promoting your ecommerce site is what will determine whether or not you make a profit. How you promote your ecommerce site will determine how much profit you will make the first month, the first year, and for the life of the business.

First things first: the reason you have an ecommerce site is to sell your products. Each page that lists a product needs to have words to offer the consumer as much information as possible about the product that you have to offer.

Because your pictures don't have the benefit of touch and three dimensional site, your pictures need to offer as many angles as possible, including close-ups and labels if applicable. In this way, your customer can feel confident that he or she is going to get exactly what they want.

Search engines, however, can't see pictures. The only way that search engine spiders will pick up your site when a customer searches a key phrase that relates to your product is if you have text that relates to that product on the page. Include it in the title bar for the page, in the header and throughout the descriptive text. Use variations of the words within the product name as well as words that are related. In this way, the search engine will recognize your page as a legitimate landing site for the consumer.
Don't get too carried away with the text, however. Keep the word count between 250 words and 750 words. Too little and there isn't enough information to convince the search engines or the consumer that you are the expert you claim to be. Too much and the consumer gets bored or overwhelmed and clicks through without reading anything.

Once you have your ecommerce site set up, properly filled up with informative text and pictures, submit your URL to main directories like Dmoz and Yahoo. Directories are great places for consumers to get focused results for their key phrase searches. Finding your site here lends it credibility that search engines don't offer.

In the same way, niche directories offer the same authority to your site and then some. Because your site must pass an acceptance process, to be included in their directory means something in the business world. Only sites that are qualified and related to the particular niche of the directory are included.

If your ecommerce site is among them, you're guaranteed a much higher percentage of traffic that will not only come to your site but are more likely to stay, purchase, and return often.

Your next step in promoting your ecommerce site is something like advertising. Get your name, your brand, and your URL everywhere that matters. That means posting your expert industry related advice on forums that consumers interested in your product area are likely to roam.

For blogs in your sphere of influence, that goes double. Blogs, especially, are gaining popularity by the day and have the added feature of RSS feeds which allow its regulars to subscribe to an alert system which lets them know every time a new post (i.e. your new post) goes up.

Next, offer to post the link to a complementary business on your site in exchange for them posting yours. In this way, you both gain the coveted link back that search engines use as part of their formula for calculating your page rank. Your expertise can also get link backs with the even more highly coveted one way link back when you write articles and include your URL in your bio box at the bottom.

Submit these articles to free article directories where they can get picked up by bloggers and newsletter editors in your industry. Finally, you can implement these ideas and watch your traffic numbers rise and your profits soar within weeks.

Do not believe that you are not a writer. For some it is harder work than for others, but if you intend to be a successful internet marketer and have those vacations at the beach, every moment spent will be worth your while.

Increasing website traffic is the name of the game on the internet. It's important to note, however that there is no one thing that can bring instant traffic or ongoing sales. It's a combination of strategies that promote contact and networking.

Not all strategies work for everyone, so it's important to know what the options are, utilize a few that look appealing and stick with what works for you.

Here's a few tips and strategies that have worked for me. Give them all a try or perhaps just one. Any or all can make a healthy difference:

1. Write A Press Release

A press release is not a sales pitch and sales hype is not allowed. It is, however, your chance to provide your business story which can be a powerful form of marketing. When writing your press release you'll want to provide the who, what, where, when, how and why of your business. Create interest by detailing who you are, what you are about, why you went into business, but more importantly, how your customers have benefited.

An effective press release can create a newsworthy story that is capable of creating buzz and interest all across the web for a long time to come.

2. Create A Blog

Whether you have a website or not, a blog is an ideal tool for giving you and/or your business a favorable presence.

Think of a blog as a diary. Create your blog by posting your products and information. Then on a daily or weekly basis add additional products, information or comments. Invite comments from others and before you know it you'll have a steady stream of visitors.

If you don't have a website, creating a blog is a great place to start and you can create one for free. If you do have a website, a blog will help generate visitors. The beauty of blogs is that you can also add Google adsense ads for additional revenue.

It's not rocket science. You simply need to write a compelling ad, research relevant keywords and understand your return on investment. This means that if your product earns you $20 per sale then you must pay no more than 20 cents per keyword, preferably less.

For example, on average, your ad will bring in one sale per 100 clicks on that ad. If 100 clicks brings one $20 sale then you've just paid $20 for that ad (100 x .20) and you broke even. Therefore, your goal should be to pay less than 20 cents per keyword but no more. Finding relevant, less popular keywords is goal.

Of course, the better the ad and the better your website's sales copy performs, the more sales you will receive.

5. Write An Article

Don't put this one off. The internet is designed to deliver information and what better way for you to get the word out about you, your business and your expertise than by providing relevant, useful information. If you're selling scrapbooks, write an article on how to scrapbook. A well written article can show someone how easy scrapbooking is, boost their interest and therefore encourage a sale.

If writing an article is not something you feel you can do, have it written for you, it's not expensive and it's one of the best ways to bring traffic to your site.

6. Carefully Optimize Your Site For The Search Engines

Don't build your site and forget it. Utilize the search engines to your benefit by taking the time to optimize your site. Optimization doesn't have to be complex. Simply create a title that clearly depicts what your site is about and write a description that accurately describes to your readers what information you have to offer. Research relevant keyword phrases as opposed to single words and repeat that phrase in your title, description and throughout your page.

7. Create A Newsletter

Your goal should be to keep your viewers coming back to your site over and over again. The best way to keep in touch with viewers is through publishing a newsletter or a periodical that offers beneficial, useful information.

Post a newsletter form on your site and specifically direct your viewers to sign-up. Don't just expect them to notice that you have a newsletter, direct them there and be specific about what your newsletter offers.

By publishing a weekly newsletter you are reminding your readers of your products, sales or upcoming events. Avoid pushy sales tactics and sales hype. Simply offer useful information, tips and advice. Make your newsletter a thing of value by keeping them interested and encouraged.
It's important to remember that it takes an average of 7 visits for a viewer to buy; they're not likely to visit seven times without a reminder.

8. Offer Something Free

We all love free and the internet is no exception.

- If you publish a newsletter, offer a free ebook or free e-course in exchange for an email address. In your newsletter also offer a free tips section that pertains to your site's topic.

- If someone makes a purchase, consider offering a free bonus, this often prompts sales.

- Offer free teleseminars. This is an excellent way to let your viewers hear your voice and experience who you really are. It builds trust and they won't soon forget who you are and what you are about.

9. Make A Donation

Create a promotion where you will be donating a percentage of your proceeds to your favorite charity. Donating money or services to your favorite charity builds trust and a positive image for your business. I'd much rather buy from someone that donates a few dollars to a worthy cause than someone who doesn't.

10. Participate In Discussion Forums

Take the time to find online forums that are relevant to your business. By responding to questions, offering advice or posting your articles, others will see you as an expert in your field as well as someone willing to help. Posting on a weekly basis will allow readers to become familiar with you and your business as well as regarding you as a respected authority.

When registering on a forum be sure to create a signature file that includes your website address. This will post your website address each time you make a forum entry.

The Present and the Future of Keyword Ownership

Have you ever seen an add that offers you ownership of a keyword? If you’re on the internet much, or if you have an email account, the answer to that question is almost certainly a yes.

There are many services out there that offer to sell you keyword ownership – specifically premium keyword ownership – for the cost of a few hundred dollars every year. The primary selling point used by these companies is that if anyone happens to type the keyword you have purchased into the address bar of their internet browser, then they will automatically be sent directly to your website. There are, in fact, about 2 percent of internet users around the globe who have this ability enabled on their computers, since it specifically requires certain element such as Internet Explorer.

Studies have shown that approximately 4 to 7 percent of all search queries are done by way of a keyword being entered into the address bar of the internet browser being used. For Internet Explorer users, any search queries performed using the address bar are defaulted to an MSN search. However, over time, most of us have installed a good deal of additional software onto our computers, allowing for such searches to be re-routed to other search portals. This is often a sign of having installed a file sharing software. Among the spyware and potential for viruses, worms, and other undesirable additions to your computer, by installing a program such as Limeware, Morpheus, or Kazaa, you may have altered your default search in your address bar from MSN to a different portal altogether.

Of the queries that are entered into the address bar, approximately 50 percent of them are the result of having accidentally mistyped their desired URL, therefore instigating a keyword search. This accounts for the between 2 and 4 percent of internet users who actually use the address bar to perform their searches.

To understand the way that this functions, it is important to know how address bars work. There are many different companies offering the ownership of keywords. So many, in fact, that they are able to compete with each other, and even sell the very same keywords, only to different search companies. This being said, it means that if you buy a keyword, then depending on the company you buy it from, they may only make the search available to those specific internet users who have installed that company’s unique proprietary address bar plug-in. This makes the total number of people quite low for entering your keyword into the address bar and then find your site.

Though it is up to you whether you choose to use keyword ownership among your online marketing techniques, it is vital that you keep yourself informed of the actual potential that this method will offer you. Never hesitate to ask questions of the company you’re considering, and if anything looks fishy or not as appealing as it should, simply walk away. There is lots of competition out there, and there is surely someone who will be willing to make you a better deal.

A marketing strategy based on keyword ownership is difficult to measure. After all, many of the tools for the process are not interchangeable, there are many competing companies all selling the same companies to your competition, and your target of internet users is quite small in the first place. It can easily happen that all of the money you spend on such keyword ownership will lead to absolutely nothing.

In competition with these keyword ownership businesses are the search engines themselves; specifically those who have their own toolbars. Many of the major search engines offer a downloadable toolbar that allows you to enter keywords and run searches quickly and easily. You are then presented with that search engine’s range of closest matches from all of their indexed websites. Not only does this not cost anything, but more than one keyword possibility can lead to your site.

As you can see, it is quite clear that keyword ownership can be quite the tricky business and must be managed with the utmost research and technical knowledge if any notable gains are to be witnessed

Before I divulge the vault of successful web business secrets I must warn you of one thing. All the information in the world will not take the place of determination and persistence. A web business is just like an offline business. It takes hard work and resolve to succeed. However working smart is heads and tails better than plain old working. These 4 secrets will turn any smart working, dedicated average Joe or Jane into a successful web business owner.

Web Success Secret #1) Content is king.

Heard that before? I know I have. The thing I never knew was how to use content to my advantage. Content is useless unless it is optimized for the search engines. It must also be optimized for your reader. You have two customers- readers and search engines. You must satisfy both with the same exact content.

Content is king only if you have exact and highly specific keywords placed in correct locations. Unfortunately the hard part is determining what keywords to use. A keyword can be a single word or a phrase. It is the term that web surfers use to search for information. Place yourself in their shoes and try to discover what search terms they use. You must then evaluate the search term. How many people search using that term? How many sites already deliver information on that search term? Simple demand and supply rules. The more demand with the less supply equals more profitability.

You have several options for determining keywords and their profit potential. Search yourself, pay a company to search for you or have your hosting company do a complete keyword search for your niche or web business topic. If your hosting company does not offer this service I recommend you switch to a plan that does. This feature alone can make or break your business' future. Without a proper keyword search and analysis you may as well forget about becoming successful with an Internet business. Investing in this one secret is literally the start of planning your website.

Your next action step is to plan your site layout based on the 50-175 high-demand and low-supply keywords. Your site should be structured in three tiers. Tier one is your home page. Tier two is made of all of your main topics and also constitutes your navigation bar buttons. Tier three keywords are sub-topics of tier two pages. Organize your 50-175 keywords into three tiers. Doing this makes it easier for visitors to navigate through your site and it makes it easier for search engine spiders to find all of your pages.

Search engine spiders do not like to fish around for all of your pages and links. This is why many sites offer a “site map”. A site map is one page that contains links to all of the content pages. This is a fine route to take; however most people agree that pages with a lot of links on it are valued less than content pages that casually link to other content pages.

Using three tiers allows you to go from topic to sub-topic to sub-sub-topic all by natural in-content links. For example, tier 1 is the homepage on a fitness site. Tier 2 is a page all about cardio activity and its benefits. A tier three page off of that tier 2 page is about different treadmill routines. Do you see how the site visitor would like this structure? They click on “Cardio” and are given links to more specific pages about cardio topics. Search engine spiders like the three tier structure too. It means they do not have to dig through layers and levels of useless links.

There is even more to content than finding profitable keywords and structuring your site into easy-to-navigate tiers. You must optimize each and every page on your website to perform well and rank high at search engines. Many people devote their working life to optimization secrets. A full length article just on optimizing is possible. Heck, a full length book is possible. My recommendation is to use a hosting company that automatically teaches you how to optimize web pages for the engines. Doing that will cause less headache and frustration and it will keep you focused on building content.

A quick education in optimization: place your specific keyword in the file name, title, description and keyword section of your page. Then sprinkle the keyword throughout the content. Also provide a link using your specific keyword in the link text. If all of this has you spinning your head, I recommend going the hosting company I use. They literally teach you to build a website using blocks. It’s all simple and easier than you think.

There is one last piece to content. It must effectively pre-sell your product or service and position you as the expert in your field. When your website has 50-175 optimized pages for your visitors to read through it will start to position you as the expert. Your site will become known as the place for information about (insert your niche).

When visitors find your site through search engines they are seeking information about a problem or question they have. If they land on your site and you try to sell them something right away one thing is sure- they click the back button and find another site that will give them information. This is why pre-selling your product or service is paramount. Give your visitors what they want. Answer their question and in the process let them know about your services and products.

All of the information develops rapport and trust with your site visitor. It positions you as an expert. It keeps your visitor on your site longer since they are actually reading content. Search engines notice this and rank you better. How well your site can keep visitors is known as "stickiness." Your site must attract and keep visitors for as long as possible.

Provide content that pre-sells your products, positions you as the expert and focuses on highly profitable keywords. You cannot go wrong with your web business if you do those things. The secret to content is to satisfy both your visitor and search engines. Lose one or both and you are doomed. As I mentioned earlier, it is best to work smarter and not harder. The Right Answers To Internet Marketing Guarantees Success

Why do so many people struggle heroically with Internet Marketing, only to fail, give up, and return to their lackluster life, claiming bitterly that “it doesn’t work?”

E-commerce has grown by leaps and bounds and continues to set new marks every year. As comfortable as you and I might be using the Internet, it is really only in its infancy. As huge as Google is, it was only created in 1998. Think about that for minute. Google is less than 10 years old. My, how far we have come!

As the Internet continues to grow, how web marketing will evolve is a much discussed subject. There is little doubt the future is bright. As more people join up with the Internet revolution, e-commerce continues to grow. Still, one can’t help but acknowledge Internet users are becoming more sophisticated, particularly as a younger generation moves into adulthood and gets issued credit cards.

Web marketing is currently a bit of a mess. Remnants of the old, such as banner ads and email marketing, are arguably one their way out. Banner ads produce horrific click through rates because people are wary of getting stuck on a site they can’t get away from. Email marketing is tainted by problems such as spam, phishing scams and identity theft concerns. Personally, I delete all email that isn’t from a person I know. It is just too risky.

The dominant web marketing models now are pay-per-click advertising and search engine optimization. Search engine optimization will be around as long as people use search engines. The promise of free traffic is simply too glorious to ignore. Since it is fairly difficult to commit fraud in search engine optimization, it is difficult to see any future legal issues threatening it. That being said, people will always find ways to bend the rules.

Pay-per-click advertising [“ppc”] has a less clear future. The primary problem is click fraud. Click fraud occurs when a ppc ad is artificially clicked. The only intention of the clicker is to cost the advertiser money. Some estimate the percentage of fraudulent clicks on ppc platforms runs as high as forty percent. If true, this theoretically means you could take forty percent of your advertising budget, use it as toilet paper and get the same sales results. Pretty scary, eh?

So, what do the next 10 years hold in store for marketing on the web? In my personal view, search engine optimization will remain the dominant online marketing method. PPC will also continue, but will be modified into something used to conquer click fraud. I also think information publishing in the form of free copyright articles will become more and more dominant.

Combined, these three platforms represent the future of web marketing. Of course, nobody could have foreseen the explosion of EBay ten years ago, so we may all be surprised by where things stand in five or ten years. Considering Google is less than 10 years old, nobody can really say what might pop up tomorrow.

Last week I talked about the importance of finding your niche. I mentioned how significant it was to feel passion and interest in your business idea. I received quite a few emails asking for more clarification. So I am writing this next new article to provide more information on finding a niche, but more importantly I am going to show you a tool that will help you determine the perfect niche business idea.

First let’s talk about what a niche is, why it is important and how you should narrow the field. A niche is a focused area of concentration. A niche could be about orchids whereas a topic, or non-niche, would be flowers. Orchids are focused. Flowers are topics.

It is important to find your niche in business because it answers extremely relevant questions. You must know who your customers are and what they want from you. Choosing a niche almost immediately fills in all blanks about your target market. Knowing your customer and their problems will allow you to offer solutions. Solutions are products or services that you offer to a group of targeted individuals.

Narrowing down your niche can be hard. Start by writing down all the things you love to do and enjoy in life. Include life experiences, jobs, skills, interests and passions. Really dig in and take the time to think of lots of ideas. Get specific. Ask others what they think your niche is. You may find some really surprising answers!

There is another way to narrow down your niche as well. It’s a new tool designed to help you navigate through questions with multiple answers. On the other hand there is the “Fire-Aim-Ready” syndrome which is quite opposite. It is for people who just go out and create without putting much effort or planning into their course of action. It often results in mistakes and possibly failure. Poor planning is definitely to be avoided.

Internet Marketing Tools... Which Ones?

Can Internet marketing tools help you make a lot of money? Some of them can, but if you want tools you need to add them as the money comes in. There are a few tools you should have when you start your business, but I just don't believe you should go out and buy a large amount of tools starting out. After you have some money coming in and you find a tool that will make your job a little easier go ahead get it, but if you are not making some money in your business now chances are the tools are not going to do it for you.

There is one tool I recommend every marketer have starting out. I can't think of any type of marketing on the Internet where an auto responder would not come in handy. I'm not talking about a free auto responder, because after you have made some money on the Internet you will realize the importance of paying for a good auto responder, but what happens with the prospects you built with the free auto responder, you will probably lose most of them, because your new auto responder will require them to sign up for your paid auto responder and most of them won't sign up.

If all you had was an auto responder you could build a business on the Internet without buying any other tools. Just building a list of prospects is building is a business. So you could build a business on the Internet for $17.00 to $25.00 a month. I'm not sure what every auto responder cost, but I think that would be in the ball park. It's really a fantastic deal, where else can you start a business for $25.00 a month? The auto responder may be the most important tool you will ever purchase, so go ahead and get it now, you are going to need it, believe me.

I guess a website is a tool and you may want to have a site, but many people are starting a blog instead of a website. You can find a free blog at blogger.com and not have to pay for a domain and hosting if you are just starting out, providing you have bought your auto responder. If you decide to use a blog we are still at the $25.00 a month level. There is another tool you could purchase, but it may not be a necessity, it all depends on how you are going to market.

I bring a lot of traffic to my site by writing articles. You may find other ways of bringing traffic to your website or blog, but if you decide to write articles to bring traffic I would invest in an article submitter. There is a wide range in price here, but I pay $40.00 every three months for my article submitter. The submitter I use will let you use their submitter for free, but you won't get the results you are looking for unless you sign up for the paid account.

There are other tools you may want later, but you can start with the tools I recommended and do very well on the Internet. If you use the tools I talked about you will be spending about $33.00 a month to start your business. In three or four months you could be making more than that from your new business, where else but the Internet is that possible?

Web Marketing and Website Traffic Analysis

Among the best ways to get the very most out of your web marketing is to analyze the traffic that you already have on you website. You need to develop an understanding of who is visiting your website, what they want from your website, and what they’re doing once they’re there.

Unless you have this information, it is challenging to improve it in a way that will better meet the expectations of your visitors.

In order to analyze your website traffic, you can choose one or many of the following four techniques:

» A webpage counter
» A statistical package from your ISP
» Web traffic analysis software
» Hire a professional to audit your website traffic

Counters are one of the oldest tools that have been added to websites. They can be visible to your website visitors, or invisible to them so that only you can see. A web counter is a very basic addition to your website that simply registers the number of people who visit any given page on your site.

Of course, showing this isn’t exactly the most professional way to run a website. Sure, they’re alright for personal pages, but for a business that is trying to develop a good reputation and make a good impression, this probably isn’t really the way to go.

With the statistical package from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), you’ll be able to have a look at a log of every visit your website has received. This will be available to you in the form of either a webpage or a graphic for your analysis. The information is often registered in raw NCSA combined log file format, which is rather challenging to use for the average user.

It is full of complicated coding that must be deciphered for each individual “hit” that your webpage has received. If you know what you’re doing, however, this method does indeed provide you with a good amount of information, such as the way that people are getting to your website (for example, by way of a search engine or a link from another site) and what they are doing at your site once they have arrived.

If you are using a good quality ISP, then you will likely have a freeware version of a popular statistical analysis package available to you. There are many good ones from which you can choose, and you’ll find the results very useful. You can have your ISP produce a daily, weekly, monthly (etc) report for you to use. They can either be posted on a webpage for you, or emailed directly into your inbox. You’ll need to contact your ISP to find out exactly what services they offer in this regard.

If that doesn’t work for you, if you want a better detailed report, or if your ISP simply doesn’t provide that service, then you may wish to purchase a web traffic analysis software program. There are tons of these programs available at affordable prices that will provide you with a broad range of analysis options for the traffic you receive on your website.

To use these programs, you simply need to download access logs from your ISP using an FTP program. You’ll need to ask your ISP about the directory in which those logs can be found. The software will then parse (interpret) the raw log file information one line at a time to provide you with results in various combinations and formats for your use.

Though the more high-end programs can cost over $5 thousand, there are many software packages that are available to us “normal folk” with varying degrees of options and abilities, but at much more affordable prices. You can easily obtain a good quality software package at around $300.

So why do you need these stats so badly for your web marketing? The fact of the matter is that they give you a goal for your marketing. They show you:

» Which web pages on your site are most popular
» Which pages on your site are least popular
» Who is visiting your website
» Which browsers they are using to view your website
» Which search engines are sending the most visitors
» Which banner ads are sending you the most visitors
»Where the errors and bad links may exist on your website.
