However, as with any good thing, there are those intent on abusing it and turning it from a way to make a legitimate living into a tool for thievery. It doesn't matter where on the affiliate program ladder they are-affiliate, merchant or buyer-scammers and fraud can appear anywhere.

However, as with any other fraudulent activity, if you keep your eyes open and your wits about you, you will see the signs and be able to disengage before too much damage is done. Here are some things you ought to look for, some red lights that can save you money, time and a great deal of aggravation.

Abusive Affiliates

Affiliates bent on fraudulent activities typically have their efforts revolve around the payment model, which is usually a pay-per-click or a pay-per-action (sale, registration, etc.) and can be either a manual thing or, in the case of pay-per-click affiliates, fully automated through the use of scripts, called "click bots" that mimic the activities of real human visitors. The Welcome Call

Your affiliate manager should contact each affiliate applicant over the telephone. During this call you will begin to develop a relationship with the new applicant and get to know them. You will also evaluate potential traffic, discuss expectations, offer campaign suggestions and inform them of any special affiliate promotions you may be running.

Managing the Metrics

Once your affiliate is up and running, you need to keep an eye on what they are doing. The two primary metrics you need to be looking at are traffic patterns and conversions. Traffic patterns are simply the flow of visitors through their site and where they go once they click on the affiliate's banner ads. Conversions are those clicks coming to your site that end in either a sale or some other valuable activity such as filling out a registration form. Exactly what counts as a conversion is up to you.

When it comes to conversions, you want to play the averages. The results of your affiliate should not deviate too much from the established average conversion rates (usually about 1-3 conversions per 200 product views) for your business. If they are too low, your ad is probably in the wrong place. If they are too high, you need to consider whether or not your affiliate is using incentives or placing fake orders.

How do your affiliate conversions stack up against the traffic they are producing? To put it another way, if you see a great deal of traffic from an affiliate but few or no conversions, then there may be a problem, especially if you are running a pay-per-click program and your non-affiliate conversions are significantly higher. This is an illustration of why you want to move away from a pay-per-click model and go to a pay-per-sale one instead.

Look to Your Top Producers for Clues

You will have a handful of affiliates that will produce most of your good traffic. Establish and maintain a solid working relationship with this group. According to Dave Cosper, Vice President of marketing here at America's Best Companies, "You should always look for programs where the affiliate payout is at least 25% of the product/service being referred."

For example, if a merchant is selling a product for $100, they should be paying the affiliate at least $25. "Here at ABC, for example, we pay a 33% commission to our affiliates for one-year member enrollments," added Cosper. Fraudulent merchants can also deliberately underreporting sales or lead figures. This can be the result of criminal intent or desperation in the face of bankruptcy or some other crisis. Either way, it is the affiliate that pays.

In his article, "The Red Flags of Affiliate Marketing Scams," affiliate entrepreneur Clay Mabbit describes the six things that any potential affiliate should look for when considering developing a relationship with a merchant as well as what they mean.

These signs of a scam are:

No affiliate support contact. When an affiliate program includes a toll-free telephone number, it's a good sign that things are on the up and up.

However, the lack of a phone number does not necessarily mean the program needs to be avoided. The Internet lends itself to email contact, and most websites structure their contact support system accordingly. If the website for an online income opportunity does not include an email or a contact form, though, you are probably looking at an affiliate program scam. Once you locate the email or contact from, it's a good idea to send a message with a simple question to see how long it takes the company to respond. If you don't receive a response addressing your question within a few days, tread lightly. The company might not be intentionally trying to scam you, but if they can't quickly respond to emails, they are doing something wrong.

No website. Similarly a contact email without a website shouldn't instill much confidence. A legitimate online income opportunity will have a detailed web site, providing information and showing some time and energy has gone into planning. A simple website is not difficult to create, but leaves a slightly larger trail leading back to the creator than that left by a mass emailing. Again, while the presence of a website is not a guarantee that a program is trustworthy, the absence of a web site should definitely be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism.

No product or service. What is the company selling? If the only product is a chance to make money, you've probably stumbled onto a pyramid scheme. In order for any referral marketing organization to make money, someone on the outside must pay money to the organization. If the only people paying are joining the organization, than no income is being generated. The members are just passing money around between themselves with everyone hoping to be holding the bag of money when the music stops. Above and beyond this fundamental flaw in the business model, pyramid schemes are also illegal in the United States.

No free participation. If you have to pay a company for the privilege of trying to sell their product and increase their profits, you aren't looking at an affiliate program. You've found an example of multi-level marketing (MLM). Not all MLM opportunities are scams, and some people are extremely successful at MLM. Unfortunately, if you aren't one of the few who can make it work; you'll usually spend a fair chunk of change discovering this MLM program doesn't fit your needs. True affiliate programs are free to join. If things don't work out the way you expected, you haven't risked any of your money.

No positive testimonials. Even though there is no financial cost for an affiliate program, you will be investing quite a bit of your most precious commodity, time. Before making that sacrifice, it's always a good idea to spend some time scouring the Internet for people who have some experience with your program.

Don't rely on the testimonials a company provides on their website to give you a complete and accurate picture. Head to your favorite search engine and see what kind of dirt you can dig up. A search with the program name and the word "review", "scam", or "experience" is a good place to start. Even high caliber programs will likely have some negative reviews from people frustrated the program wasn't a good fit for them, so don't immediately condemn an opportunity for a little bad press. Unless a program is brand new, though, you should be able to find a few positive experiences and success stories.

No track record. A good affiliate program is going to continue to be a good affiliate program for a while. Resist the temptation to be swayed by marketing hype that urges you to "get in on the ground floor" of a brand new opportunity. Of course, there's something to be said for being the first to market with a new idea, so you shouldn't be afraid to immediately embrace an affiliate program that you feel good about and doesn't set off any of the other red flags described here.

If you are on the bubble trying to decide if a program is legitimate, though, you're better off waiting. In six months dependable affiliate opportunities with quality, high-demand products will still be around, and they'll still be plenty of money to be made. Meanwhile, most of the affiliate program scams will have collapsed.

Bullying Buyers and the Network

Yes, even some of your customers will try to cheat you. You may find yourself facing stolen or fraudulent credit and debit cards, bad checks of various stripes, illegal paypal chargebacks, fake registration information and more. The number of ways that these criminals try to work you over is dizzying proof of human ingenuity if nothing else. This is where a legitimate affiliate network can come in handy. These organizations will check out transactions-credit and debit card numbers, IP-addresses and other things that could indicate fraud-before they take place and often have a fraud database to keep criminals, once they have been identified by their system, from coming back and trying again.

When considering an affiliate program, either as a merchant looking to recruit affiliates or as a potential affiliate looking for business, it is a good idea to consider joining a reputable affiliate network. They offer safety to merchants and add a bit of credibility to fledgling affiliate sites.

Affiliate Marketing - Competition Analysis 101

Like the heading states, in this article I'll be discussing competition analysis and I'll be showing you some of the methods to use to do so. We'll be finding out who exactly your competitors are, how many of them are there and what keywords are they targeting. It's pretty important to do this after you have done your keyword research or even better to combine this and do it while doing keyword research. By doing this you will get a good indication of how full or empty your chosen niche is and if it is profitable.

So after doing your keyword research head over to Google, with your main theme or term.

Now take the keyword you wish to analyze and perform a search query. Google will in turn bring back all the results of pages that have been indexed with the word you queried and will highlight it in bold blue. Now this is not the best way to do targeted competitor research, because a lot of the websites brought back don't even target that specific keyword or aren't at all related to that theme. So the number you'll see after performing your search is in most cases extremely bloated and there is not a chance that the amounts of competitors are that high.

To find out exactly how many indexed pages in Google are targeting that exact term or phrase - do the following:

Next add your search term between quotation marks. Now click search again and see how the number drops.
You should see a pretty big drop in the competition after your initial search, but even so you're not done yet. The list of sites you see only have the targeted word or phrase in their content, that's not to say that their site is related or specifically targeting the above theme. So here's how you find out who you're real competitors are - the guys optimizing their sites for the keywords in and around yours.

Start by removing the quotation marks around the phrase in the search box. Then go ahead and add the following directly in front of the keyword (allintitle:) without the brackets and then click search.

Now the number you see after doing the allintitle search will give you the correct competition value. These site's specifically target the queried search term. They use the keyword in their page, content, url and obviously title. So they are truly optimizing their site for that specific keyword, phrase and ultimately that niche.

Ok, so how much is too much competition. Well we personally recommend you to stick to the lower range when it comes to competition, especially in the earlier stages of your affiliate marketing endeavors. Go for niches with competitors less than a 10 000, that's save for now.

Think of it as when you were little, did you try out for the little league baseball team or did you go all the way to the major league... makes sense doesn't it. So stick to what you know for now.
Make sure to play around with this and before you know it you'll find a market with high demand and not enough suppliers. Lookout for gaps like that in the beginning which will make all your efforts worth while.

Lastly, Make Sure To Never Do The Following...

When starting to optimize your website and after you found a valid keyword... make sure that the keyword you chose has sponsored links and listings in Google. Never optimize a page for a certain keyword if it doesn't have sponsored links. The sponsored links and amount of it tells you that there is money to be made from that keyword or niche.

Internet affiliate marketing seems to be one of those black/white, love it/hate it kinds of things.

The people who are making tons of money with affiliate marketing can't stop telling you why you should jump right on the band wagon with them - and the people who have never gotten affiliate marketing to pay off for them frequently report that the whole idea is just one huge scam!

Like almost everything else in life, reality is somewhere in the middle - in that fuzzy gray area in between black and white.

My goal here is to help sort out some of the facts from the fiction, and separate the reality from the hype.

First of all, it is completely possible to make a lot of money with affiliate marketing. In fact, people all over the world have "quit their day jobs," "earn six-figure incomes," and "work at home when they want to" - just like all the sales pitches tell you.

But here's what the sales pitches don't include along with all the pictures of mansions, ocean-going yachts, and glorious beach vacation photos.

All those people who have turned affiliate marketing into their "golden egg" have worked hard to do it. Yep. Worked. Hard.

That's reality. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You have to work to get what you want. Mom was right!

If you are looking for instant, no-effort, "push-button" riches, affiliate marketing isn't for you. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

On the other hand, it you are willing to learn some new things, invest some time and some energy in it, affiliate marketing can do everything you want from it - with unlimited rewards for you.

In fact, few, if any, business functions today are not in some way informed by the Internet and that is especially true in the realm of sales and marketing. When you think about online marketing, what comes to mind? Search engine optimization or e-mail marketing are probably at the top of the list, but there is something else in the marketing arsenal that you may be overlooking: Affiliate marketing.

How Affiliate Marketing Works

At its most elementary level, affiliate marketing is a fairly simple and straightforward affair in which one business partners with another, placing an ad link on the second company's website and paying that company for every sale that a visitor sent over from that affiliate site makes on the seller's site.

It is a solid, reciprocal relationship. The affiliate drives customers to the seller and the seller pays the affiliate for the traffic. This type of business arrangement, where the seller pays a commission for sales leads, is referred to as revenue sharing, and has been around in one form or another for as long as large scale sales efforts have existed. It entered the world of ecommerce the same way that so many other innovations have, through the adult entertainment industry.

Affiliate advertising is, usually, a pay-per-action (also known as a cost-per-action or CPA) affair. In other words, something that you and your affiliate have made an agreement about happens, such as an ad link being clicked and a sale being made, and you owe that affiliate money. This is different from pay-per-click (also known as a cost-per-click or CPC) arrangements where payment is made for each click on the ad. That means, whether or not you convert that click into a sale, the affiliate gets paid.

This is in stark contrast to display ads where you pay once and the more customers respond the cheaper the ad (in terms of cost per customer). Because of this, it is important to be able to set an advertising budget-especially for pay-per-click arrangements-large enough to pay for the number of expected clicks or actions, regardless of the number of sales that result.

Types of Affiliate Programs

While there are no real industry-wide standards for categorizing affiliate marketing sites, the following is a basic list of the types of sites that are used by affiliate marketers:

Click-per-action networks are affiliates that expose their advertisers to their own network of affiliates (also known as top-tier affiliates)
Search affiliates that use pay-per-click search engines to promote advertiser offers
Co-registration affiliates that include offers from other companies during the registration process for their own website.
Blogs and RSS feeds
Email list affiliates
Comparison shopping and directory sites
Loyalty sites that provide some kind of reward system for purchases
Coupon and rebate sites
Content, niche and product review sites
Personal websites

Getting Paid: How compensation works

You are paid by your customers, your affiliates are paid by you, but how? There are a number of different compensation schemes and either you or your affiliate will have a preference for one or another. In some cases the issue is negotiable, in others it is not. The various compensation schemes are:

Revenue sharing, also called "cost-per-sale" (CPS) is the compensation method of choice today, accounting for 80% of all affiliate programs today.
Cost-per-action (CPA) is the second most prevalent scheme in use today, accounting for another 19% of affiliate programs.
Other methods such as cost-per-click (CPC), where the advertiser pays for each click, and cost-per-mille (CPM), where the advertiser pays for every 1000 ad views, come in at 1% of affiliate programs. The use of these methods declined over the years for a variety of reasons that included the necessity to pay even though the ad failed to produce sales and, in the case of cost-per-click, fraud. These methods are, however, still used extensively in display advertisement and paid search programs.

CPS and CPA schemes have higher expectations before a commission check is issued to the affiliate. In fact, as the names imply, the customer has to buy something. Only then will the affiliate receive payment. In this arrangement the advertiser and the affiliate share the risk of the venture. It is from this model that affiliate marketing gets its other name, "performance marketing." To make it under these rules, the affiliate must send only the best leads since it is only after a sale is made that the advertiser will reward the affiliate.

Multilevel Programs

While the vast majority of affiliate programs are simple, one-tier affairs, it can go beyond that. Such programs fall under the heading of multi-tier marketing: An advertiser makes an agreement with an affiliate. This is the "top-tier" affiliate. That affiliate then attracts other affiliates and the deal moves down to them. Our top-tier affiliate is paid at the agreed upon rate and gets a commission on everything that the "second-tier" affiliates bring in. Any referral program that develops beyond these initial two levels is considered a multilevel marketing or network marketing scheme. Given the terrible reputation these businesses have, it is wise to simply avoid them completely.

Finding Affiliates

It is not difficult to find affiliates. In fact, almost any website could be recruited as an affiliate. Bear in mind that high traffic websites will likely prefer CPM or CPC deals because these have a lower risk than CPA or revenue sharing. Some places to look while recruiting include:
Affiliate networks that already have a number of advertisers. These networks normally have a large number of potential affiliates for your company.
Sites that are relevant for the same audience that the advertiser is trying to reach. As long as the potential affiliate's site is not in direct competition with the advertiser, it can work.
Vendors or existing customers could be recruited as long as doing so doesn't pose any legal or regulatory issues.

The cost-per-sale model makes affiliate advertising very popular since you only pay for results. The biggest con regarding this method of marketing is history itself. Spam, adware, spamdexing, trademark bidding, pay-per-click fraud and a number of other issues have given this kind of marketing a bad name over the years. These troubles, however, are becoming less and less prevalent due to advances in technology and better methodologies for dealing with them. This, coupled with the way one only needs to pay for results, leaves affiliate marketing as a strong way to reach the audience you are looking for.

Let me share my experience with you. How I decided to pursue affiliate marketing because I believe earning money online is not achievable. I, however, was so naive to think that make money online was actually impossible for someone like me. I did not even know how to make a website. I am not a computer techie.

Miracle happened, I would say; after reading a confession that a housewife without any internet experience can earn money online at home. I had no reason to think I could not do that. Getting started was the hardest part. But I am glad I did try; now it does not seem so hard like I thought it was.

I was testing affiliate marketing for fun. I thought it would be good if it worked, if it did not work, I would not bother to continue considering I spent nothing to start but my time. Doing it for fun will only demotivate you to continue. If it was not for this phrase I accidentally read, I would have given up by now.
